Prof. Xin Dong is a NOKOV user and Associate Professor in Robotics at the University of Nottingham (UK). He led his team to publish a Nature Communications paper on a 1.7 mm ultra-thin soft robot for exploration of narrow spaces, which was presented at ROBOSOFT 2025 .
Designed for in-situ inspection without disassembly, the proposed thin soft robot (TS-robot) addresses a persistent challenge in aerospace and nuclear industries. Powered by dielectric elastomers and a negative Poisson’s ratio mechanism, TS-robot enables multiple modes of locomotion in millimeter-scale environments.
Prof. Xin Dong leads his team at the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Manufacturing and On-Wing Technology, providing robotic innovations to support high-demand industrial applications. In both soft and continuum robotics, NOKOV Motion Capture plays a vital role. For example, NOKOV can provide shape feedback for continuum robots, displacement tracking for soft actuators, and support the evaluation of control algorithms.
